Stonehaven Library
Initially we were commissioned to create interior design work for Peterhead, Westhill, Ellon and Inverurie Libraires. The work was so well received that we were then asked to look at two more libraries – Stonehaven and Fraserburgh.
Stonehaven, in terms of scope, became our more ambitious treatment.
The design
The library is divided into two very large rooms – upstairs being the most impressive with a long aspect and curved sides. As with the other libraries in the area, Stonehaven Library had undergone a significant transformation with a brighter colour scheme and a far greater emphasis on community.
We continued to use our now well-recognised words on the walls, added more, and increased them in scale. In fact, the words on the left and right curved walls are huge and essentially work as sculptural elements.
The heritage panel, incorporating photography from the Stonehaven archives is an impressive 10m x 1m.
The design treatment continued with an elegant poetry panel that connects the two rooms over the stairwell. Exterior windows have vinyl signs and display panels inside the narrow rooms which are used to display events at the library and in the local area.
